Dementia, music and biometric gaming: Rising to the Dementia Challenge
In 2012, the U.K. government launched its Dementia Challenge, authorizing additional funding for dementia research and health care. The search for curative medicines is ongoing, but scientific research reveals evidence that music can play a positive role in general health, and in dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in particular. This article considers whether some of the challenges that dementia presents could be addressed through music therapy and proposes that biometric gaming might offer one means of channeling such associated health benefits to sufferers of dementia, even in the final stages of the disease

Role of Coulomb correlation on magnetic and transport properties of doped manganites: La0.5Sr0.5MnO3 and LaSr2Mn2O7
Results of LSDA and LSDA+U calculations of the electronic structure and
magnetic configurations of the 50% hole-doped pseudocubic perovskite
La0.5Sr0.5MnO3 and double layered LaSr2Mn2O7 are presented. We demonstrate that
the on-site Coulomb correlation (U) of Mn d electrons has a very different
influence on the (i) band formations, (ii) magnetic ground states, (iii)
interlayer exchange interactions, and (iv) anisotropy of the electrical
transport in these two manganites. A possible reason why the LSDA failures in
predicting observed magnetic and transport properties of the double layered
compound - in contrast to the doped perovskite manganite - is considered on the
basis of a p-d hybridization analysis.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure
Time dependence in perpendicular media with a soft underlayer
In this paper we describe measurements of magnetic viscosity or time dependence in magnetic thin films suitable for use as perpendicular recording media. Generally, such effects cannot be measured using conventional magnetometry techniques due to the presence of a thin (0.1 mum) soft underlayer (SUL) in the media necessary to focus the head field. To achieve our results we have developed an ultrastable MOKE magnetometer, the construction of which is described. This has enabled us to measure nominally identical films with and without the presence of the SUL. We find that the presence of the SUL narrows the energy barrier distribution in the perpendicular film increasing the nucleation field (H-n), reducing the coercivity (H-c) and results in an increase in the squareness of the loop. This in turn results in an increase in the magnitude of the viscosity in the region of the H-c but that the range of fields over which the viscosity occurs is reduced
Interaction between Faraday rotation and Cotton-Mouton effects in polarimetry modeling for NSTX
The evolution of electromagnetic wave polarization is modeled for propagation
in the major radial direction in the National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX)
with retroreflection from the center stack of the vacuum vessel. This modeling
illustrates that the Cotton-Mouton effect-elliptization due to the magnetic
field perpendicular to the propagation direction-is shown to be strongly
weighted to the high-field region of the plasma. An interaction between the
Faraday rotation and Cotton-Mouton effects is also clearly identified.
Elliptization occurs when the wave polarization direction is neither parallel
nor perpendicular to the local transverse magnetic field. Since Faraday
rotation modifies the polarization direction during propagation, it must also
affect the resultant elliptization. The Cotton-Mouton effect also intrinsically
results in rotation of the polarization direction, but this effect is less
significant in the plasma conditions modeled. The interaction increases at
longer wavelength, and complicates interpretation of polarimetry measurements.Comment: Contributed paper published as part of the Proceedings of the 18th
